Laura May McDonald

Aug. 19, 1972 - Jan. 21, 2012

After a long courageous battle with cancer, Laura May McDonald, age 39, of Pontiac, died at home on Saturday January 21, 2012 with her family at her bedside.

Laura, the daughter of Lawrence "Buckshot" and Sandra (Sachs) McDonald, was born in Cheboygan on August 19, 1972.  Laura grew up in Lapeer and graduated in 1990 from Lapeer East High School.  After graduation Laura moved to Spokane, WA where she worked as a security guard in a hospital.  Laura returned to Michigan in 2004 and worked in security for St. John's Hospital in Detroit and then as a fire marshal for the Chrysler Corporation.

During her childhood Laura enjoyed spending most weekends and vacations in Onaway.  She treasured spending time with her family and looked forward to family gatherings.  She was the "Tom Boy" of the family and enjoyed sports, especially softball and fishing.  Laura's greatest love was for animals, especially dogs.  She was a volunteer with an animal rescue organization and her own dog, Nitro was trained and certified as a therapy dog to go into hospitals to visit children and cancer patients.

Surviving are Laura's parents, Lawrence "Buckshot" and Sandra McDonald of Onaway; sisters, Sally (Robert) Carmack of Pontiac (whom Laura lived with) and Barbara (Mark) Hayner of Onaway; brother, Larry McDonald of Jackson; grandmother, Dorothy Sachs of Onaway; Great Dane, Nitro; as well as, nieces and nephews - Amber, Devin, Chelsea, Madison, Zander, Mark, Thomas, Haley, Trinity, Zavier, and Ryker.  Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Laura was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lawrence and Alma McDonald and grandfather, John Sachs.

Visitation will be held at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway on Wednesday Jan. 25, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service of remembrance at 7:00 p.m.  Laura's final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Onaway.  Her family has suggested donations to honor Laura's memory be to them to help pay for medical and final expenses.
