Mrs. Fay Lee
Born Evelyn Thompson in 1913, Fay grew up in Onaway until her parents moved to Alma, Michigan. There she graduated from high school and went to college at Western Michigan University receiving a bachelor’s degree in teaching.
Fay married her childhood sweetheart Bob Lee and they moved to Warren, Michigan. When World War Two broke out Bob enlisted in the Navy and Fay stayed in Warren, raising their son Russell, and teaching school. When her husband returned from the war they returned to Onaway and eventually opened Fay’s Dress Shops in nine locations throughout northern Michigan.
Mrs. Lee was active in the Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce and the Onaway chapter of the Eastern Star. In the early 1950’s Fay and Bob with other community leaders built the first clinic and hospital in Onaway. Russell Memorial Hospital was named after their first son Russell who died in a tragic accident in 1948.
Cremation arrangements were in care of the Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens. A Memorial Service will be held at the Chagnon Funeral Home at a later date. In lieu of flowers please remember Fay by making donations to the Onaway Ambulance Equipment Fund.
