Carl Edward Shaloy, Jr.
After graduation from Onaway High School Carl joined the U.S. Navy. He served his country for ten years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged from the Navy and returning home to Onaway Carl became a letter carrier for the Onaway Post Office. He retired in 1997 after 25 years of service.
Carl was a life member of Onaway VFW Post 5857 and was a former member of the Cheboygan Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He served as VFW Post Commander in Onaway and helped in the construction of the VFW Hall. Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He always had a fishing pole in his car, even on the mail route, and was always ready to stop at some fishing hole to see what was biting. Carl’s other passion was fast cars. He loved tinkering with cars while listening to loud music and then taking a ride to see how fast he could go. Being a mailman, Carl also enjoyed collecting postage stamps. He loved his family dearly and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
Surviving are Carl’s wife of 49 years, Judy of Onaway; sons, Kirk of Millersburg, Ohio and Robert (Pam) of Howell; daughters, Dawn (Mike) Beem of Nashville, Tennessee and Becky (Greg) Karsten of Onaway; Nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; as well as, sister, Claudia (Angelo) Santini of Petoskey; and brothers, John (Karen) and Andrew, both of Onaway. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister, Mary Margaret Dehring.
Visitation will be held at the Chagnon Funeral Home on Monday February 20, 2012 from 4 pm – 8 pm with a VFW Service at 7:30 pm. The funeral service will be on Tuesday February 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chagnon Funeral Home with Elder Harry Hyde officiating. The family has suggested donations to honor the memory of Carl E. Shaloy Jr. be made to the Onaway Ambulance Equipment Fund.
