William Arthur Hyde, age 86 of Onaway, died May 1, 2006 at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills. Bill was born in Marion County, Indiana on December 15, 1919 to William and Pearl (Christie) Hyde. On September 6, 1980 he was married to Rosalind (Hedels) Clark in Detroit. Bill moved to the Onaway area from Detroit in 1976. He retired from the State of Michigan where he had worked as a contract supervisor and was a member of the Onaway United Methodist Church. Bill was an Army veteran of WWII. Although he had been trained as a skier for duty in northern climates, Bill ended up stationed in the South Pacific at Hickam Army Airfield in Hawaii. Bill was there on December 7, 1941, the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. He said that was by far the scariest day of his entire life. After Pearl Harbor, Bill was seriously wounded at the Battle of Palau and received a purple heart for injuries sustained there. Sgt. William A. Hyde was in the 3rd Battalion, Company 1, 11th Infantry. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and photography. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Rosalind of Florida; step-son, William (Jennifer Janson) Clark of Farmington Hills; and granddaughter, Victoria Saunders of Waterford. |
