Ila Mae Merritt, age 102 of Onaway, died September 17, 2006 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. Ila was born in Alpena on September 10, 1904 to Melbourne and Cynthia (Doolittle) Smith. On September 6, 1925 she married Floyd "Mike" Merritt in Muskegon. Ila was a lifelong resident of the Onaway area and worked in administration at the bank and also as a clerk for the R.E.A. until she retired in 1955. Mrs. Merritt was a member of the Onaway Methodist Church, Onaway Historical Preservation Committee, Friends of the Library, a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, and many other organizations throughout her life. Ila enjoyed oil painting, baking, crocheting, knitting, reading, working in her flower gardens, and especially spending time with friends and family. She will be sadly missed by many, many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Ila was preceded in death by her husband, Mike (1985); brothers, Merle Smith; Frank Smith and Bob Smith; sisters, Donna Brown and Hazel Smith. |
