Ray William Warren, age 99 of Onaway, went to be with the Lord on May 6, 2007. Ray was born in Onaway to William and Marie (Thomsen) Warren on January 26, 1908, upstairs in the building which is now Great Northern Drug. Ray was raised on his parents' farm 3 1/2 miles south of Onaway. He graduated from Onaway High School and attended County Normal and Central Michigan University to obtain his teaching degree. He taught school at the Hackett Lake Schoolhouse as well as in Molke, Cadillac, and Mio. Ray also worked for United Airlines before joining the service. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Army Air Corp (now the Air Force), serving at Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory and in Alaska during WWII as a meteorologist. He married Mariana Thomsen of Ludington in 1945 who he had met while teaching in Mio. After his discharge from the Army Air Corp, Ray resumed working for United Airlines. He and Mariana lived in Denver, Seattle, and San Francisco before returning to Onaway where they operated a dairy farm until resuming school teaching. Ray taught math at the Onaway Area Community Schools until his retirement. After retirement, Ray enjoyed traveling, gardening, and doing various carpentry projects with other members of the First Baptist Church of Onaway where he and his wife were members for many years. He is survived by his "favorite" wife of 61 years, Mariana of Onaway; daughter, Serena Warren of Petoskey; son, Jon (Cheryl) Warren of Oregon; and grandson, Michael Ray Warren also of Oregon. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Hitchcock's and the Hospice nurses for all their loving care and support. |
