Harry L. Haviland, after 83 healthy years, died December 17, 2008 at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey after recently finding out he had esophageal cancer. Harry was born in Onaway on July 12, 1925 to Harry and Irene (Woodbury) Haviland. Harry was born and raised in Onaway and was a graduate of Onaway High School. On October 20, 1956 he married Shirley Hebert in Grand Blanc. Harry and Shirley moved back to Onaway from California where he worked as a bank manager. He served his country in the Marines during World War II, fighting in the South Pacific. Harry was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal for injuries he received in battle. He was a lifetime member of the Onaway VFW Post 5857. Harry was an avid sports fan. He loved to attend the Onaway High School football, basketball, and baseball games. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, and most of all socializing, especially at the restaurants and coffee shops in town. Harry also liked watching western movies, was a dog lover, and was also known to be quite witty. Harry will be sadly missed by his daughter, Kathleen (Larry) Owens of Georgia; son, Arlie (Sherry) Haviland of Claifornia; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Haviland of Tennessee; 6 grandchildren; special friend, Peggy Kosnik; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (May 30, 1998); son, Harry Haviland, Jr.; and brother, Arlie Haviland. |
