Robert "Bob" Gordon Nelson, age 89 of Onaway died January 28, 2008 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. Bob was born in Detroit on August 16, 1918. On February 2, 1942 he was married to Ruth L. McAtee in St. Louis, Missouri. Bob moved to the area in 1942. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army from 1943-1945 in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. After he returned home, Bob worked for Presque Isle Electric as a lineman and in the Engineering Department until his retirement in 1984. On July 3, 1987 he married Betty R. Blamer in Onaway. He was very active in the community. Bob was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5857 and a past post commander. He also served on the Presque Isle County Draft Board, was a volunteer for social services and the Red Cross, was a past boy scout master and board member, and was a member of the United Methodist Church. Bob served as the Mayor of Onaway in 1974 and for 32 years was a volunteer for the Onaway Fire Department. He enjoyed woodworking and yard work. Bob is survived by two sons, Robert J. (Maria) Nelson of Wolverine and Jon H. (Sue) Nelson of Onaway; daughter, Catherine J. (Martin) Bailey of Wolverine; several step-children; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and many step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and 2nd wife, Betty. |
