Benjamin J. Schebella, age 102 of Onaway, died September 9, 2008 at Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City. Ben was born in Hagensville on February 14, 1906 to Stanislaus "Steve" and Rosalie (Kowalski) Schebella. On October 1, 1932 he was married to Minnie Lincoln at St. Paul's Rectory in Onaway. Ben was a lifelong resident of the Onaway area and graduated from Onaway High School in 1926. He played on the basketball team throughout high school and could remember all of the dates, scores, and names of the opponents he played against for all of the games. For most of his working years, Ben earned his living as a woodsman and a farmer. Many years ago he worked at the Lobdell Emery Factory in Onaway and also the A & P Grocery Store. Ben was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the building committee. He was a simple man in his pursuits. Ben liked cutting wood, gardening, and fishing. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed spending time at his camp in Ocqueoc. Ben was also an avid reader. He would read anything he could get his hands on. He loved people and especially loved a good conversation. Ben will be sadly missed by his daughters, Yvonne Walsh of Big Rapids and Gail Alford of Onaway; son, Gary (Janie) Schebella of Sterling, VA; 16 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; cousin, Helen Schebella of Posen; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie; two infant sons, Benjamin, Jr. and Robert Joseph; brother, Mike Schebella; sisters, Helen Davis, Clara Wize, and Nellie Peterson; grandson, James Walsh, Jr.; great granddaughter, Kelly Beck; and son-in-law, James Walsh. |
