Helen "Jean" Chapman, age 87, lifelong resident of Onaway and Millersburg, died July 4, 2009 at her home.
Jean was born in Millersburg on September 29, 1921 to George and Eva (Freel) Fitzpatrick. On February 2, 1940 she was married to Newton William Chapman, Sr. in Pontiac.
Jean worked as a cook for the Onaway Schools and then at the UAW Family Education Center from where she retired in 1996. She was a member of the Onaway Baptist Chapel, Eastern Stars, VFW Post 5857 Ladies Auxiliary, and Onaway Sports Boosters. Jean's greatest enjoyment was in watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren play sports. She was a dedicated Onaway Cardinal Fan and throughout the years attended many, amny wrestling meets, football, basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball games. Jean also was a great fan of the Detroit Pistons. She loved watching the birds, flower gardening, reading, and watching Wheel of Fortune. She was a devoted mother and a wonderful cook and homemaker.
Jean will be sadly missed by her sons, Nute (Pat), Clark (Paula), Cal (Denise), and Mark (Cathy Brenner) Chapman all of Onaway, and Chad and Mick (Cheryl) Chapman both of Millersburg; daughters, Cheryl Sullivan of Petoskey, Connie (Jerry) Pilarski of Grand Lake (Presque Isle), Cathie (John) Foeller of Black Lake, and Eva (Terry) Taffe of Onaway; step-daughters, Arlene Crawford of Wolverine, Joanne Wright of Torch Lake, and Carey Cairnduss of Traverse City; faithful friend, Simba (Jean's poodle); many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Newton Chapman, Sr. (1991); son, Charles Chapman; grandsons, Chris Chapman and Jerry Ray "Bear" Fedynik; granddaughters, Soni Rae Foeller and Jeannie Sue Bryan;
brothers, Russell and Ford Fitzpatrick; and sisters, Verna Averill, Blanche Walbert, and Faith Fitzpatrick.
