Douglas Charles Cole, Sr., age 86 of Onaway, died July 17, 2009 at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey. Doug was born in Grace Harbor on September 28, 1922 to Charles and Clarabelle (Conley) Cole. On July 10, 1948 he was married to Clarissa "Jean" McClary in Onaway. Doug fought proudly for his country during World War II as a demolitions expert in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific. He was a lifelong resident of Northen Michigan and a member of the Forest Preston American Legion Post in Onaway. Doug worked as a heany equipment operator doing road construction for CLC Construction Company and also worked in the woods cutting timber. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved telling stories and jokes and was a very skilled knife maker and an avid reader. Doug will be sadly missed by his wife of 61 years, Jean Cole of Onaway; daughter, Terrie Linn (Butch) Olson of Jackson, Mississippi; sons, Douglas (Sariah) Cole of Trapper Creek, Alaska and Lyle (Diane Grainger) and Eddie Cole both of Onaway; many grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and sisters, Dorothy Sigsby of Onaway and Delores Gauth of Bay City. He was preceded in death by his sons, Clayton and Virgil Cole; daughter-in-law, Janice Cole; sisters, Doreen Kemp and Alice O'Connell; and brother, Glenn Cole. |
