Donald E. Holmes, age 81 of Onaway, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Don was born in Alba on October 14, 1927 to James E. and Joyce E. (Carter) Holmes. On June 24, 1952 he was married to the late Wilma Paulus at the Onaway United Methodist Church. Don remarried on June 24, 1989 to Elizabeth "Betty" Larson Horrocks at the Onaway United Methodist Church.
Don moved from Alba to Onaway where he worked as a teacher and high school principal at the Onaway Community Schools. He retired in 1986 after 37 years, 35 of which he was principal of the high school. He was a member of the Onaway United Methodist Church, the Kissimmee (Florida) United Methodist Church, and the Kiwanis Club of Cheboygan. Don enjoyed making model airplanes and doing lapidary work. He liked to work out in his yard and ride his tractor. He also enjoyed spending summers in Onaway and wintering in Florida.
Don will be sadly missed by his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Horrocks-Holmes of Onaway; sons, Donald (Dawn) Holmes of Fife Lake, James (Karen) Holmes of Island Lake, Illinois, and Jerry (Carrie) Holmes of Traverse City; daughter, Diane Holmes of Frankenmuth; step-daughters, Janel (Merle) Horrocks-Boehmer of Williamston, Myla (James Loman) Horrocks of L'Anse, and Heidi (Ben Penhale) Horrocks of Walled Lake; step-sons, Todd (Sherma) Horrocks of Vestaburg, Kipp (Colleen) Horrocks of Midland, and Van (Kaileen) Horrocks of Dowling; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and 9 step- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma (1987); and brother, James R. Holmes (1986).
