Margaret G. Latter, 89, of Indian River, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 30, 2009, at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich, near her daughter's residence in Metamora, Michigan. Margaret was born September 20, 1920, in Redford, and was the daughter of John and Cecilia (Brahm) Wallace. The Wallace family moved to Leamington, Ontario in 1925 and then settled in Detroit in 1927. Margaret graduated in 1941 from Cass Technical High School. Preceded in death by two husbands, Margaret's only child, Mary Margaret was born in 1949. Margaret worked for several years as a sheet metal worker in Detroit, then as one of the first female postal carriers in Michigan, carrying mail on the Springwells route for the Detroit Post Office. She moved for a brief period to Clearwater, Florida, and finally settled in Indian River in 1974 where her family had been regularly vacationing since they built a cottage on Mullett Lake in the 1940s and where one brother, John Bruce was also residing. Margaret enjoyed her work as a Physical Instrumentation Technician at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey until she retired in 1980. Margaret loved her Indian River home and relished spending time with family, friends and neighbors. She took pleasure in the arts and crafts and in giving away much of her handiwork, oftentimes to the less fortunate. Margaret was especially appreciated for the tender loving long-term care she gladly provided many youngsters in the family. She was happy to be a member of the Transfiguration Episcopal Church. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Hawkins of Metamora, MI, two granddaughters, Bridget Hawkins of Galveston, TX and Kelly Hawkins of Waco, TX; siblings Cecilia Clos of Canton, MI, retired Deacon John Benjamin Wallace, Jr. of Alanson, Chaplain John Bruce Wallace of Indian River, and John Benton Wallace of Fowlerville, MI; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The family extends their deep appreciation for the care provided by the home care staff of Genesys Hospice, by the hospice house staff of Genesys Hospice Care Center and outside of the family for the open hearts, compassion and tender loving care provided by Carl Woodley, Mary Margaret's partner of Metamora, by Georgetta Redrup of the Cheboygan Area Council on Aging, and by Margaret's exemplary neighbors Howard and Jan Schuman of Indian River. The family also wishes to acknowledge the many years of service and entertainment provided to Margaret by the Michigan Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. |
