John "Carl" Merrick, age 74 of Black Lake, died March 27, 2009 at his home. Carl was born in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania on June 22, 1934 to Matthew and Anna (Kulik) Merrick. On October 9, 1954 he was married to Kathleen Malay at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Wyandotte. In 1971, the Merricks moved from Wyandotte to Black Lake to run Merricks Grocery. Carl worked for General Motors as a wood pattern maker before moving up north. From 1975 until his retirement in 1986 Carl worked at the UAW Education Center. Carl was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Men's Club, Thursday Night Men's Golf League at Stoney Links, C.Y.O. Coaching-football, basketball, and baseball. Carl enjoyed fishing, and family get togethers, but his greatest passion was woodworking. Over the years he made many beautiful pieces of furniture and other wood items. He also had a lot of fun coaching the Cheboygan men's league hockey team that his sons played on. Carl was an avid golfer, partnering with his son, Bob, they won the league championship a few years ago. Carl will be sadly missed by his wife of 55 years, Kathy Merrick of Black Lake; sons, Mike (Jill) Merrick of Rogers City, David (Kim) Merrick of Houston, Texas, and Bob (Lori) Merrick of Cheboygan; daughter, Sue (Jim) Ziegler of Cheboygan; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and sister, Cookie (John) Malay of Black Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael and Paul; and sisters, Thelma and Helen. |
