Captain Richard A. Sobeck, age 72, of Millersburg, died at home on Monday March 1, 2010. Richard was born in Rogers City on February 13, 1938 to George and Cecelia (Kowalski) Sobeck. On October 9, 1965, Dick married Vivian A. McDonald at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Onaway.
Dick was a life long resident of Presque Isle County, living in Rogers City and then in Millersburg. For many years Dick sailed on the Great Lakes for U.S. Steel and eventually became Captain. He first captained the Calcite II and then the George A. Sloan. Captain Richard Sobeck retired in January of 2000. Dick was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He served his country in the U.S. Navy.
Dick was a fun loving guy with a good sense of humor and the ability to tell a good story. He enjoyed spending time with his family and occasionally playing a practical joke. Dick enjoyed the outdoors, whether he was four wheeling, berry picking, camping, fishing or hunting. Not only was Dick a Captain, he also was a King... "King of the Remote". He liked watching television and channel surfing.
Dick is survived by his wife of 44 years, Vivian Sobeck of Millersburg; daughter, Anne (Dan) Kruczynski of Cheboygan; sons, Anthony "Tony" Sobeck of Millersburg and Frederick Sobeck of Hawks; granddaughter, Roxanne Sobeck of Millersburg; grandsons, Scott Wright of Millersburg, James and Daniel Kruczynski of Cheboygan; and great granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emily Kruczynski also of Cheboygan. Also surviving are Dick's sisters, Judy Grulke of Michigan, Marge (Ralph) Erickson, Joan (Chuck) Dettloff, Betsy (Rodney) Fleming, and Kari Sobeck, all of Rogers City and brothers, Michael Sobeck and John (Julie) Sobeck, also of Rogers City, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Preceding Dick in death are his daughter, Carolyn; brothers, Fred and George Sobeck; and sister, Delphine Yarch.
Visitation will be at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway on Wednesday March 3, 2010 from 4 pm - 9 pm with a Rosary at 7 p.m. led by the Knights of Columbus. The funeral mass will be from St. Paul's Catholic Church on Thursday March 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with a dinner to follow at St. Paul's Hall. Father Arthur Duchnowicz will officiate. Dick's final resting place will be in Millersburg at Riverside Cemetery. His family has suggested that donations in memory of Captain Richard A. Sobeck be directed to the the Window Restoration Fund at St. Paul's Catholic Church.
