Frederick Charles Baumgarten, age 80, of Hillman, died at home on April 14, 2010. Fred was born on May 24, 1929 in Columbus Township, Michigan to Ervin and Hazel (Winter) Baumgarten.
Fred grew up in Mt. Clemens, lived in Onaway for 28 years before moving to Pickford, and then in 2008, relocated to Hillman. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in Detroit and a merchant seaman for U.S. Steel before working for the Ford Motor Company. When Fred moved north, he worked as a builder in Onaway and the surrounding areas and eventually was an over the road trucker for CFI.
Fred enjoyed fishing, especially for walleye, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid fan of Nascar and did some racing himself. Fred enjoyed racing cars with his brothers and in the 1950's raced sprint cars.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Betty (nee Botwinis) Baumgarten of Hillman; daughters, Catherine, Donna (Mike) Hallock of Toledo, Ohio, Lisa Baumgarten of Hillman, and Kathy Baumgarten of Onaway ; sons, Frederick Baumgarten Jr., Douglas (Deb) Elwell of Kentucky, Gary (Joy) Elwell of Onaway, David (Sharon K.) Elwell of Jackson, Chris (Sharon F.) Elwell of Onaway, Joe Baumgarten of Cheboygan and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary Reno of West Branch, Barbara (Donald) Pearl of Jeddo, and Delores (Rudy) Angermeier of Avon Park, Florida; and one brother, Norbert (Delores) Baumgarten of Mt. Clemens.
Preceding Fred in death are two sons, Randy and David Baumgarten and four brothers, Donald, Edward, Ervin Jr., and Robert.
Visitation will be on Friday April 16, 2010 from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway. Pastor Joshua Ketelson will officiate.
