Joyce M. Butler, age 79, of Onaway, formerly of Farmington Hills and Ypsilanti, died at home on Sunday May 30, 2010. Joyce was born in Detroit on September 2, 1930, the daughter of James and Sylvia (Schimmel) McCosh. On January 27, 1949 Joyce married George Laskosky in Farmington. They had seven children and made their home in Farmington Hills. After George's death, Joyce married C. Michael Butler on October 1, 1983 in Onaway at St. Paul's Catholic Church. In 1985, Joyce and Michael moved permanently to Onaway from Ypsilanti to the vacation home Joyce had owned since 1970.
Joyce was an active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and Altar Society, a hardworking member of Onaway VFW Post 5857 Ladies Auxiliary and was Auxiliary President for the last 10 years, she was very proud to be in the Church Women United, a square-dancing Jack Pine Twirler, and a dedicated member of Curves. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and knitting, especially the afghans she made for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joyce's greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was very proud of her family.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 27 years, Michael Butler, of Onaway; five sons, James (Donna) Laskosky of Commerce, David (Patricia) Laskosky and Douglas (Judy) Laskosky, both of Farmington Hills, Mark (Debra) Laskosky of South Lyon, and Matthew (Christine) Laskosky of Buford, GA; two daughters, Donna (Gary) Shortt of Farmington Hills and Norma (Donald) Johnson of New Baltimore; four step-daughters, Debra Ann Rigsby of Maybee, Kathleen Southerland of Belleville, Sandra Fortner of Canton, and Diana Rodgers of Brighton; 29 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and sister, Virginia (John) LeBlanc of Sterling Heights.
Joyce is preceded in death by her first husband, George Laskosky in 1980; grandson, Derek Shortt; sister, Beatrice Castiglione; and infant brother, James Douglas McCosh.
Visitation for Joyce will start on Wednesday June 2, 2010 at 2:00 PM with a VFW Ladies Auxiliary Service at 7:00 PM followed by a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM, with visitation continuing until 9:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be on Thursday June 3, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Onaway followed by cremation. Immediately after the funeral mass there will be a dinner at St. Paul's Hall. Joyce's final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Onaway where her ashes will be buried. There also will be a mass in memory of Joyce to be held at a later date in Farmington Hills at the Servant Church of St. Alexander. |
