Barbra A. Holley, age 73, of Tower, Michigan formerly of Hebron, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Six Nations of the Grand River near Brantford, Ontario, died at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital on Friday June 22, 2010. Barbra was born in Cherokee, North Carolina on February 12, 1937, the daughter of John and Beaden (Brooks) Lowrie. At the age of 12, she was adopted by Albert and Agnes (Goodridge) Avery. On March 30, 1963 Barbra married John "Jack" Thomas Holley in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Barbra worked as a school teacher for the Cincinnati Public Schools. She retired in 1968. From 1968 until 1983 Barbra ran a wholesale fruit and vegetable market and delivery business in Cincinnati.
Barbra was very proud of her Native American Heritage. She enjoyed making Native American clothing and bead work and was involved with many tribal activities and traditional Native American Ceremonies. Her other hobbies included cooking, shopping, reading, and watching her favorite television shows, CSI, Walker Texas Ranger, and the Hallmark Channel. Barbra had a special fondness for all animals, especially her cat, Boo.
Barbra will be sadly missed by all the children and grandchildren she adopted and loved. She was known as "Mom" by all who knew her. Her grandchildren lovingly called her "Babbajjino". She is survived by her son, Patrick Evan Holley (DeDee) of Tower; granddaughters, Kalena Rayne, Caytlen Summer, and Clarisa Elizabeth; and grandson, Kaimyn Thomas all of Six Nations, Ontario. Also surviving are brothers, Eric "Doghouse" (Deborah) Gray and Gustavo (Alcira) Sanchez, both of Vancouver, British Columbia and great nephews, Tom and Bob Lupu and families of Onaway. Barbra also leaves behind the families she adopted, Ellis and Michelle Hill and their children, Luke, Galen, and Alaya of Six Nations; Jim and Margaret Marshall and their children, Sara, Jessica, and Andrea of Fairview, Michigan; Gary Tucker of Onaway; Oly (Cindy "Bubbles") Larios of Tower; and adopted grandson, Johnathan Douglas Premoe of Tower. Barbra is also survived by numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
Preceding Barbra in death are her husband, John "Jack" Holley on April 22, 1982 and many brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday June 23, 2010 from 5 pm - 9 pm at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway with a funeral the following morning at 11:00 am, also at the funeral home. The traditional Native American Ceremonies will be led by Eric "Doghouse" Gray, Hereditary Tsimian Chief and Gustavo Sanchez, Mayan Priest. Barbra's final resting place will be with her husband in Hebron, Kentucky at the Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery. A graveside service will be held on Saturday June 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the cemetery with Pastor Bill Vines officiating.
