Carl F. Materna, age 95, of Gaylord, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan died Friday April 30, 2010 at Aspen Ridge Assisted Living in Gaylord. He was born on May 22, 1914 to Anton and Frieda Martha (Hille) Materna in Sault Ste. Marie. He married Mildred G. Ray on April 8, 1939 in Sault Ste. Marie.
Carl was a life long resident of the Soo, an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a member of the American Legion, and served on the draft board in Sault Ste. Marie for 20 years. He worked as a photographer with his brother, Walter, at Materna's Photo Studio and worked for the International Bridge Authority as a toll collector. Carl retired 32 years ago.
Carl served in the United States Navy during World War II as a photographer. Carl's hobbies included playing golf and cribbage.
Surviving Carl is his wife of 71 years, Mildred Materna of Gaylord; daughter, Karlene (Gary) Crawford of Gaylord; sons, Terry (Bonnie) of Onaway, Tony (Ann) of Rockland, Massachusetts, and Robert (Ann) of Plymouth, Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
Preceding Carl in death are his parents; daughter, Sondra Materna; two brothers, Hank and Walter; and sister, Frieda.
At the graveside service the American Legion and VFW Post of Sault Ste. Marie presented the flag to the family of Carl with a gun salute and taps.
