John R. Thomas, age 86, of Millersburg, formerly of Superior, Wisconsin, died Monday May 17, 2010 at Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City, Michigan. The son of Walter and Jenny (Buxton) Thomas, he was born December 29, 1923 in Superior, Wisconsin, where he lived his entire life until moving to Millersburg in August of 2005 to be closer to his family. In 1982, after 31 years, John retired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad where he had worked as an engineering clerk. Retirement gave John more time to enjoy gardening, woodworking, and photography. John was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Superior, Wisconsin and the Itasca Presbytery. He was the moderator of the Northern Waters Presbytery, treasurer for 17 years, and an elder in the church since 1946. John served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He was with the 832nd Bomb Squadron of the 8th Air Force, serving in England and France. John was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945. Surviving John are his sister Ethel Freel of Millersburg, 3 nieces; Jane E. Freel of Millersburg, Helen Markham of Coventry, England and Joyce Milostan of Hemlock. Also surviving are 6 nephews Walter Freel of Denver, CO, Rodney Freel of Clio, Gary Freel of Imlay City, Jeffrey Freel of Oden, Randall Freel of Hawks and Eric Freel of Macon, GA. He is also survived by many great nieces and great nephews. Preceding John in death are his parents; brothers Rolland and David Thomas; and nephew Alger D. Freel. |
