Obituary for Carl E. Martin

Carl E. Martin, age 79, of Afton, died at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey on Tuesday June 4, 2019. The son of John James and Noreen Faye (LaFortune) Martin, Carl was born at the Martin Homestead in Walker Township on September 17, 1939.

A lifelong resident of Onaway and Afton, Carl made his living working in the woods as a lumberjack. He was a quiet guy who kept to himself and enjoyed the solitude of the woods of Northern Michigan. An avid outdoorsman, Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and morel mushroom picking. He enjoyed cook-outs and spending the day tubing down the Pigeon or Sturgeon River with his family.

Surviving Carl is his longtime companion of more than 40 years, Rae Lynn Johnson, of Afton; daughters, Robin Martin (Rick Schoolcraft) of Afton, Kelly (Al) Maupin of Wolverine, and Melanie Bishop of North Carolina; son, Matthew Martin of Wolverine; step-daughter, Danielle (Boyd) Hickok of Cheboygan; step-son, Mark Camero of Chesterfield; and several grandchildren. Carl also leaves his sisters, Florence Hilliker of Afton, Lois Dell, Dorie Martin, and Donna Kurburski, all of Petoskey; brothers, Floyd Martin of Onaway, Ronnie Martin of Indian River, and Jerry Martin of Wolverine, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his son, Michael Martin; brothers, Kenny, Jim “Bub”, and Jack Martin; and his parents.

A life celebration will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday June 8, 2019 at the Afton Community Hall on Montgomery Road. Donations in memory of Carl can be given to his family to help with final expenses.
