Obituary for Charles E. Crawford

Charles E. Crawford, age 78, a lifelong resident of Afton, died at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey on Monday December 17, 2018. The son of Wilbur and Bernetta (Hanel) Crawford, Charles was born at home on January 21, 1940. He and Jean E. Galleher were united in marriage in Cheboygan on June 27, 1959 and made their home in Afton.

Charlie worked at H & H Tube Forming in Cheboygan for many years. He retired from his position as an inspector in 2002. An avid outdoorsman, Charles enjoyed mushroom picking, hunting, fishing, and camping. He knew all the good fishing holes, the best places to pick morels, and his favorite camping spot was just a few miles from home at Osmun Lake. For 63 years he hunted whitetails in Northern Michigan and in his later years enjoyed watching the deer just as well. He enjoyed working in his garden and loved his two little dogs, Sassy and Bella, who quite often would ride with him on the four-wheeler.

Truly a family man, Charles was devoted to Jean for 59 years, was a loving father to his children and an awesome grandpa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He could be called a “kid magnet”; the young ones loved him and he had a special place in his heart for them as well. Charlie had a wonderful sense of humor, always wore a smile on his face, and was well-loved by his family and friends. A humble, honest, friendly man with a warm heart, Charles will be sadly missed and remembered with fondness.

Surviving Charlie is his wife, Jean Crawford of Afton; daughter, Barb (Brian) Thayer of Onaway; sons, Gerald (Akiko) of Seattle, Washington, Fred (Kristina) of Cheboygan, Michael (Lisa) of Attica, Donald (Amy) of Onaway, and Christopher (Molly) of South Bend, Indiana; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren. Charles also leaves brother, Richard (Shirley) of Cheboygan, Melvin (Pam) of Montrose, and Clyde (Glenda) of Onaway; sisters, Barbara (Larry) Renard and Joyce (Michael) Gleason, both of Afton; sister-in-law, Pauline Crawford; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John (Lorrene) and Edward.

A service to honor the memory of Charles will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday December 21, 2018 at the Indian River Methodist Church at 956 S. Eagle’s Nest Road.
