Obituary for Clarissa Jean Cole

Clarissa “Jean” Cole, age 88, died on Thursday December 6, 2018 at Monticello House Care Facility in Jackson, Missouri. Born in Onaway on March 23, 1930, Jean was the daughter of Virgil and Amy (Jasman) McClary. She married Douglas C. Cole on July 10, 1948 and they made their home and raised their family in Onaway.

Jean was a homemaker and worked for many years at Essex Wire in Atlanta. Many will remember her as a “Grandma” at the Onaway Elementary School where she enjoyed spending her days helping in the classroom. The kids from school held a special place in Jean’s heart and brought her great joy. She loved them and they loved her too. No matter where she was the youngsters would find “Grandma Jean” and give her a big hug. A bit of a “shutterbug”, over the years Jean took thousands of pictures, including many of her kids at school. Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors. As a younger woman, she loved hunting and fishing with her husband. Jean was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

The last few year Jeans lived in Missouri with her daughter. Easy-going and friendly, Jean settled in, made friends easily, and was affectionately known as “Mom” or “Grandma” by everyone she knew in Missouri. She loved going to quilting club with Terrie, not because she loved quilting so much, but because she loved getting out with the her friends. She loved Sunday church services followed by dinner out with her family. A real sweetheart, Jean was gentle and kind. She was will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving Jean is her daughter, Terrie (George) Olsen, of Jackson, Missouri; son, Doug, of Alaska, and Lyle (Diane) and Eddie, both of Onaway; 19 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and her sister, Mona Mann of St. Clair. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Doug (2009); sons, Clayton and Virgil; daughter-in-law, Janice; grandson, Christopher Cole; sisters, Shirley Thomas and Genevieve Vartanian; and brothers, Oren and Clayton McClary.

A graveside service will be held at North Allis Township Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Wednesday May 22, 2019. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Jean to the Onaway Ambulance Equipment Fund or to the Onaway Elementary School.
