Obituary for Emmett Thomas Mero, Sr.

Emmett T. Mero, age 95, of Black Lake (Onaway), died at home on Thursday November 21, 2019. Born at home in Onaway on February 18, 1924, Emmet was one of 12 children born to Charles T. and Eva M. (Tourangeau) Mero. He was raised in Onaway and graduated from Onaway High School in 1942. Emmett married Mary Kline in 1948. She preceded him in death and he later married Christine Petchell Rood in 1974.

Hardworking, Emmett began his first job at Harman’s Standard Oil Station when he was in junior high. He worked there throughout high school and after graduation moved to Flint for a year to teach at a Standard Oil Station that had been set-up to train men to be dealers at stations. He then returned to Onaway and worked as a bank teller, internal auditor, and managed the general ledger at the Onaway State Bank, sold real estate for Black Lake Realty and was licensed as a right of way buyer for the Michigan Highway Department, and worked as a State Farm Agent. In 1956, Emmett, Mary, and their three young children moved to Bay City where eventually four more children were born. It was in Bay City that Emmett began working in construction for two different building contractors. He enjoyed the work and construction suited Emmett well. He became manager of Economy Builders and later started his own construction company. In 1973 he returned to Onaway where he continued building homes on Black Lake. Emmett enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and wood crafts.

Surviving Emmett are four daughters, Marilyn Laurus of Onaway, Faith Mereaux and Lori (Chad) Dennis, both of Bay City, and Jacqui Brown of Colorado; two sons, Emmett T. Mero, Jr. (Kim) and Paul Mero, both of Bay City; 16 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren; as well as one sister, Rosalie Korpal of Essexville and many nieces and nephews.

Emmett was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and second wife, Chris; daughter, Marcia LaRouche; sisters, Kathleen Kapalla, Florence Larsen, Jeanette Schell, Marion Rearick, Burnetta Mero, Stella Beal, and Lillian Heyden; and brothers, Ivan, Adrian, and Orem.

Cremation arrangements are in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home. Emmett’s family is planning a graveside service at St. Paul Cemetery for next spring. Please consider a donation in memory of Emmett Mero to Friends of the Onaway State Park for the Pavilion Building Fund.
