Obituary for Ilse G. Price

Ilse G. Price, age 85, of Onaway, died on Sunday September 29, 2019 at American House in Petoskey. Born in Canow, Germany on June 5, 1934, Ilse was the daughter of Wilhelm and Lotta (Fester) Götz. It was in Germany that she met James C. Price, a young American soldier serving in the U.S. Army. James “Jim” and Ilse were married in Berlin on December 15, 1960 and made their home in Germany for two years before moving to Jim’s next duty station in Missouri. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Army, The Price family moved to Jim’s hometown of Onaway. Ilse and Jim were blessed with 29 years of marriage at the time of his death in 1989.

An excellent homemaker, Ilse was a loving wife and a nurturing mother. She was a wonderful cook and baker who made a special favorite dish for everyone in her family. She was known for her awesome carrot cake, her German applesauce cake, and her homemade dumplings. Proud of her German heritage, she often cooked delicious German foods and meals. Ilse enjoyed traveling, including visits to see her family in Germany, vacations in Hawaii and throughout the United States, and well as spending winters in Florida with her longtime companion, Ray Bailey. Passionate about playing Bingo, Ilse went to Bingo many days a week, playing in Onaway, Rogers City, Indian River, and Cheboygan. Content with the simple pleasures in life, she loved going for long peaceful walks and enjoyed working in her beautiful flower garden. Ilse was a former member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Onaway and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary in Cheboygan.

Caring and giving, Ilse was devoted to her family and adored her grandchildren. She was a quiet and private person, but had a good sense of humor around those she knew well. Quite independent and set in her ways, Ilse was honest and genuine. Ilse’s love and respect for her family, her gentle demeanor, and her warm smile will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Surviving Ilse is her daughter, Patty (Jeff) Shea of Silverton, CO; sons, James “Jim” (Ann) Price of Onaway and Judd Price of Rudyard; step-daughter, Belinda (Rick) Wall of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Jimmy (Crystal) Price, Russell (Heather) Price, Novi Price, Kayla Price, and Natasha (Osaid) Yaqub; as well as six great grandchildren. Ilse also leaves her two sisters, Ruth Rau and Jutta (Ulli) Müller, both of Germany. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Price, and her longtime companion, Ray Bailey.

A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Onaway at 1:00 PM on Tuesday October 1, 2019. Elder Thelma Curtis will officiate. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Ilse to Hospice of Michigan.
