Obituary for James E. Chaskey, Jr.

James E. Chaskey, Jr., “Jim”, age 89, of Onaway, died at home on Monday February 25, 2019. Born in Mount Clemens on December 10, 1929, Jim was one of five sons born to James E. Sr. and Lillian (Rieger) Chaskey. He was raised in Millersburg and graduated from Onaway High School. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. Jim and JoAnn (Wiggins) Stevens wed on June 18, 1966 in Rogers City. They were blessed with 40 years of marriage at the time of JoAnn’s death in 2006.

Jim lived most of his life in the Onaway area. He worked many years as a truck driver in the logging industry but was a jack of all trades. He was a good mechanic and could do just about anything when it came to construction. He was skilled in electrical and masonry, not to mention being an excellent carpenter.

Jim was a longtime member of the Black Lake Sportsman’s Club. Very active with the club, he called Bingo, ran skeet shoots, and through the years held all board positions at one time or another. Believing in preserving and protecting every aspect of our great outdoors, Jim was active with the Michigan United Conservation Clubs.

Jim and JoAnn liked to “go” and were always heading off somewhere. Avid bowlers, they were on bowling leagues together and enjoyed going to tournaments. They loved camping trips to the lake with their family, campfires, and throwing horseshoes for hours. A quiet, soft-spoken man, Jim was friends with everyone. He was humble and never wanted anyone to make a fuss over him. He also was strong-willed and quite independent. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. A remarkable man, at the age of 88 he drove from Onaway to California to visit his son and stopped in Colorado Springs along the way to see his brother. We will always remember Jim’s gentle demeanor, his warm smile, and his great love for his family

Surviving Jim are his sons, Michael Chaskey of Indian River, James R. (Virginia) Chaskey of Sunland, California, Rodney (Glenda) Chaskey of St. Clair Shores, Leaton (Judy) Stevens, Edwin Stevens, Dale Stevens, and Clay (Jeannie) Stevens, all of Onaway, TJ (Diane) Baker of Seattle, Washington; daughter, Rebecca (Kirk) Newsted of Onaway; many grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Jim also leaves his brothers, Larry (Kathy) of Onaway and Harry (Jean) of Colorado Springs.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife Joanne in 2006; daughter, Leticia Walter; and brothers, Louis “Sonny” and Joseph Chaskey.

Visitation will be at the Chagnon Funeral Home on Sunday March 3, 2019 from 12 noon until the time of the funeral and military honors beginning at 2:00 pm. Elder Thelma Curtis will officiate. Jim’s final resting place will be in Tower at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation to Jim’s family to help with expenses.
