Obituary for James "Jim" Crawford

James R. Crawford, “Jim”, age 59, of Indian River, died on Saturday March 2, 2019 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Born in Detroit on March 12, 1959, Jim was the son of John “Jack” and Mary (Angelides) Crawford. On February 10, 2017 Jim married Mary Parrott in Cheboygan.

Jim worked as a laborer and equipment operator through the IBEW and was a member of Local 876. Living most of his life in Northern Michigan, Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He loved driving two-track roads and picking morel mushrooms each spring. He also enjoyed hunting and trapping, but his greatest outdoor passion was fishing. During the summer months he’d fish for walleye on Mullet Lake and during the winter he’d fish Burt Lake. Being raised near the Pigeon River, Jim started fishing from Coxey’s Bridge (“The Tube”) when he was a young boy. And though he knew all the hot spots on the local rivers and lakes, through the years “The Tube” remained his favorite fishing hole. He spent much of his time there and even saved the life of a young boy who went through the ice after venturing too far from the river bank. A talented musician, Jim was a self-taught six-string lead and rhythm guitar player. Back in the day he played with several area bands at many of the bars in Northern Michigan. Jim had a great love for his family and enjoyed spending time with his brother, sisters, and their families.

Surviving Jim are his sisters, Marsha Passino of Afton, Maryhelen (Mike) Schmidt and Judy (Dave) Corbin, both of Indian River; brother, Douglas (Sandra) Crawford of Indian River; wife, Mary Crawford; and step-son, Justin Parrott; as well as several nieces and nephews. Jim also leaves many friends including Ray Byers, Becky Byers Wilson, Jamie Luttermoser, and Herb Hutchinson. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gwyn (Gary) Lay; nephew, Jeremy Corbin; and brother-in-law, Doug Passino.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held in May. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Jim to Sturgeon for Tomorrow, 1604 N. Black River Rd., Cheboygan, MI 49721.
