Obituary for Mary L. Kress

Mary “Mae” was born on February 2, 1929 in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, the eighth of nine children born to Frank and Josephine (Suita) Glovak. Mae’s father and her older brothers were coal miners. During WWII, three of her brothers served in the Army, two of her older sisters built airplanes at Willow Run, and Mae collected scrap metal from scrap piles near the mines. In 1943, at the age of 12, following the death of both their parents, Mae and her younger sister joined five of their siblings in Detroit, living together in a two-bedroom house on Westphalia Street. Mary married Bernie Kress in 1949 and they had four children, Chris, Gary (Diane), Alan (Linda), and Cyndi. Mary was a real-estate agent. She and Bernie moved to Indian River in 1979. Mary had been an active member of the Macomb County Democratic Party and was a current active member of the Chebogyan County Democratic Party. She protested the Vietnam War and traveled to Washington DC to attend Nixon’s’ counter-inaugural protest in 1973 and the Women’s March in 2017. She was a member of Cross in the Woods parish in Indian River. Mary died on February 16, 2019 after a brief illness.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie; by siblings, Frances (Victor) Belisle, John (Edna) Glovak, Steve (Dorothy) Glovak, Leo (Lucy) Glovak, Helen (Bill) Harvey, and Joe (Alba) Glovak; by sister-in-law, Patricia Daniels; brothers-in-law, John Finn and Ron Colonna; and by daughter-in-law, Beth. She is survived by her children, by sisters, Agnes Finn and Catherine Colonna, and by half brothers-in-law, Tom (Danielle) and Frank (Maryanne) Korson. She was a loving grandmother to Jonathan and Bryan Kress and to Emma Mulcahey. She was a dear Aunt Mae or Aunt Mary to many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Cross in the Woods on Saturday April 27, 2019 at 12 Noon. Mae's family will receive friends in the gathering area beginning at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the ACLU.
