Obituary for Thomas M. Skuse

The son of William and Leila (Dunn) Skuse, Thomas M. Skuse was born in Cheboygan on September 12, 1939 and passed away on Tuesday May 14, 2019 at the age of 79. Tom worked at Pontiac Motors and the Cheboygan County Road Commission before taking a position with Mason Public Schools where he worked as a building engineer for 23 years. It was while working for Mason Schools that he met a teacher, Peggy A. Dayton, who would later become his wife. They married on June 24, 1990 in Mason and both continued working until 1999 when they moved to Onaway to enjoy their retirement years. In addition to doing the things he enjoyed, Tom also worked during retirement for the Department of Fish and Wildlife at the Hammond Bay Biological Station.

Tom and Peggy belonged to the Kountry Kampers for 20 years, enjoying many camping expeditions throughout Michigan and the United States. They also had a memorable travels to several European countries. A member of Tip of Mitt Antique Tractor Club, Tom loved old tractors, in particular, red tractors; nothing was better to Tom than an old Farmall. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting in Northern Michigan, solving puzzles, and loved to figure out how things worked.

Strong in his Christian faith, Tom was a member of the Onaway United Methodist Church. He was friendly, had a good sense of humor, and was known to joke in a lighthearted way. Known as “the gentle giant”, Tom had a special place in his heart for children. He truly cared for the school kids and was very kind to them. Many of them have fond memories of Tom as “Santa with the red beard”.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 29 years, Peggy; sons, Kevin and Matthew; daughter, Jeanneen (Scott) Dalos and Ann (William) Trueworthy; step-son, Mark Fillmore; step-daughter, Carolyn (Duane) Brown; 25 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; as well as his brother, Sidney Skuse; and sister, Willette Sagle. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Becky Bonilla; grandson, Tony Bonilla; sisters, Lovina Cowan and Betty Jean Penfold; and brothers, George and William Skuse.

Tom’s family will receive friends at the Onaway United Methodist Church on Friday July 12, 2019 from 10 AM until the time of the memorial service beginning at 11:00 AM. Pastor Yoo Jin Kim will officiate. Tom’s final resting place will be at Waverly Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Tom to the Onaway United Methodist Church or to Friends of the Onaway Library.
